We need strong, new national environmental laws

BirdLife Australia, as a founding member of the Places You Love alliance, has joined a call for a suite of new environmental laws which will adequately protect Australia’s natural heritage, to replace the current system which is failing us all.

#Vote4birds

In just over a month, Australians will head to the polls to decide on the future we want to create. BirdLife Australia is working hard to ensure threatened birds and their habitats are part of the policy agenda, but we need your help. Pledge your support today at birdsyoulove.org and don’t forget to #vote4birds.

Conservation & Threatened Species

Threatened species listings
A number of Australian birds were officially recognised as threatened species recently, thanks in part to data collected by BirdLife Australia’s members. However, Muir’s Corella of Western Australia was removed from the list — it’s no longer a threatened species.

Swift Parrot habitat
The recent 'uplisting' of the Swift Parrot from Endangered to Critically Endangered recognises the ongoing loss of its habitat, but logging of their breeding habitat continues under a deal between the Tasmanian and Commonwealth Governments which exempts Swift Parrots from protection.

Spectacular autumn migration
Every autumn, the mass migration of honeyeaters in eastern Australia is “a true wildlife spectacle that's happening right on our doorstep”. Click here to witness it.

Old bird, new record
A Great Egret was found in South Australia last month. There’s nothing remarkable about that—except that it was found 51 years after it was banded.

Shorebird islands officially recognised
Two sandbanks in the Gold Coast’s Broadwater have been officially named after the threatened shorebirds that they support.
